Radon is a colorless and odorless, naturally-occurring radioactive gas. It originates from the breakdown of uranium deposits deep beneath the soil. When an element breaks down, it decays into a new element. Scientists refer to this as an element's half-life.
The decay process is violent within radon! There is an eight-step decay process until radon has transformed to a stable lead element. The decay chain is why radon is so dangerous. Each time an element decays, it gives off different particles and gamma rays. If those elements are in your lungs at the time of its half-life, an alpha particle is released and causes damage to your lungs. The half-life of an element differs, creating the potential to breathe in all eight steps of radon's process to reach stability.
If you and your family breathe in radon a long enough time, lung cancer can occur. Every body is different. Some people develop radon-induced lung cancer before others. Most won't at all, but the risk is not worth taking.
Radon testing is quick and easy. Radon mitigation systems can be elaborate, hidden or even simple designs. Radon systems are well worth the peace of mind knowing your family is safe by removing the radon before it enters your home.
